Resources for Writers

December 29, 20242 min read

Dear Writers,

I promised you resources you could use, and today, I would like you to consider three of my favorites…

Given that you are a writer, I ask the question: What do you want to write?

Writers do not just write books. In my long career, I have written the following: Hard Copy marketing materials, television commercials, advertisements, grant materials, resumes, newspaper articles, press releases, magazine articles, political speeches, political advertisements, and scripts for political callers.

All of these pay much quicker than the royalties on your book.

When you think about the number of words that surround you daily, someone has to write them! Cereal boxes, tech manuals, directions, and billboard advertisements are endless!

I challenge you today to spread your wings!

Consider these three resources for getting paying gigs while you write and then wait for your memoir or novel to go bestseller:

1. Amber Petty. She can be found here:About — Amber Petty.

A warning: If you are highly sensitive to cursing, Amber is NOT your girl. On the other hand, she is highly talented at what she does and is fun when she does it!

Amber teaches various classes, focusing on freelance writing and writing headlines, copy, and queries that catch an editor’s attention. She also shares job openings and editor’s requests in her weekly newsletters.

If you consider branching out, I highly recommend Amber and her classes!

2. Speaking of writing a book, how do you know what you’re writing is what editors are looking for and get real, down-to-earth feedback from publishing pros?

Think about joining MANUSCRIPT ACADEMY. They are the folks who run Manuscript Wishlist.(MSWL). You can find MSWL at The Official Manuscript Wish List Website – #MSWL: What do you wish you had in your inbox?

Peek around the Manuscript Academy site at Home—The Manuscript Academy. By the way, they also host a podcast chock full of interesting guests who get to the bottom of our publishing woes! The podcast is free wherever you listen to podcasts! The last topic was: Why Does Publishing Take So Darn Long? With Special Guest Agent Stefanie Molina. Check it out today!

3. My absolute fave go-to-gal for publishing questions is Gabriela Pereira - DIY MFA! She is just brilliant. Gabriela has a newsletter that I never miss!

Gabriela believes, as do I, that there are other ways to “earn” your master’s of fine arts degree - namely, through life experience and reading. In addition, she walks with you throughout the process. Her classes and newsletter are informative and courage-building! I urge you to check out her site today!
